<title>Using Networks to Improve UK R&amp;D
How can we best collaborate and network our way to success?</title>
<link>http://www.iasse.co.uk/index.php?id=53&#38;uid=156</link>
<description>Story: The Royal Society, 7 Carlton House Terrace, London. SW1Y 5AH
R&amp;D frequently requires collaboration between a number of organisations who may well be geographically seperated. Both formal and informal networks provide important frameworks for the exchange of knowledge and the identification of partners for collaboration in the innovation process. The UK is seen to have a global strength in the creation of networks - how can this be best used to the UK's advantage?
This event will look at the importance of networks in R&amp;D collaboration and innovation. Representatives of several different types of networks for R&amp;D will discuss their experiences, with at least one-third of the event for audience discussion. The evening will then be concluded with a drinks reception to allow informal networking.

<title>National Conference - Open Innovation in Practice</title>
<link>http://www.iasse.co.uk/index.php?id=53&#38;uid=136</link>
<description>Story: OPEN INNOVATION is a concept that in recent years has come to the forefront of innovation management. Different names are used to describe it (Procter &amp; Gamble, its highest-profile user, call their programme ‘Connect and Develop’), but Henry Chesbrough first coined the term in his seminal book Open Innovation (Harvard Business School Press, 2003).
Chesbrough’s innovation was to create a common language for people and companies to describe to the world and each other what they do, and this has enabled them to examine and implement ideas much more quickly and coherently.
The concept of Open Innovation is that by looking outside their own boundaries, companies can gain better access to ideas, knowledge, technology and markets than would be the case if they relied solely on their own resources – a relatively uncomplicated theory which many people dismiss as being too simple or merely describing what they have been doing for years.
For the past two years, the Innovation Advisory Service for the South East of England has helped numerous companies to use&amp;nbsp;Open Innovation to their advantage. Now there is an opportunity for companies to learn from this experience. On Thursday 20 March the Innovation Advisory Service South East is hosting a National Conference on Open Innovation in Practice at The Royal Society in London, where delegates will have the opportunity to hear&amp;nbsp;from companies, both large and small, about how different elements of the Open Innovation model have worked for them.
&amp;nbsp; The key note speeches will be given by:

&amp;nbsp;·&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Dr Allyson Reed, Director of Strategy &amp; Communications at the Technology&amp;nbsp; Strategy Board

<title>How Important is R&amp;D?</title>
<link>http://www.iasse.co.uk/index.php?id=53&#38;uid=110</link>
<description>Story: How important is R&amp;D?David Edgerton, Hans Rausing Professor at the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine, Imperial College LondonTuesday 30 October 2007, 6.30pmThe Royal Society, 7&amp;nbsp;Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH
For Further information CLick Here
One of the great problems we have with science and technology is that elite discussion (let alone public understanding) is based on sometimes dubious assumptions rather than on the basis of evidence. A good example is the underlying assumption that national R&amp;D spending correlates with national rates of economic growth. It does not, as I will show. But this is not an argument for the unimportance of R&amp;D. Rather it suggests that R&amp;D must be thought about in less nationalistic ways, for which there are other compelling reasons. Avoiding the naïve economics of R&amp;D is essential to good policies for R&amp;D. At the same time we need to recognise more clearly that doing R&amp;D is far from the only way of changing either the world, or the performance of the British economy.
David Edgerton was the founding director of the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at Imperial College London, where he is now Hans Rausing Professor. One of Britain's leading historians, he has challenged conventional analyses of science and technology for 20 years. He is the author of, among other works, The Shock of the Old: technology and global history since 1900, Science, Technology and the British Industrial 'Decline', 1870-1970 (Cambridge, 1996), and Warfare State: Britain 1920-1970, and writes for publications including Prospect, the London Review of Books, Nature, Times Higher Education Supplement, and the Guardian. He currently holds a Major Research Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust.

<title>Nanotechnology - Products &amp; Processes for Environmental Benefit</title>
<link>http://www.iasse.co.uk/index.php?id=53&#38;uid=60</link>
<description>Story: On 16 - 17 May The Royal Society, Carlton House Terrace, London
Themes Include: Hazardous Chemical Substitution, Resource Minimisation, Reversing Pollution and Carbon Emission Reduction

Nanotechnology is the basis of many new products and processes that can reduce pollution, minimise use of scarce resources (including energy) and offer substitutes for several hazardous chemicals.
Applications already in the market include catalysts that prevent toxic chemicals from being released into the environment, textile finishes that minimise the need for washing and reduce the transmission of disease, low - toxicity coatings that prevent biofouling, biocidal coatings that reduce the incidence and transmission of MRSA and other diseases, and new generation flame retardants that are much more environmentally friendly.

Professor Sir Howard Dalton, Chief Scientific Advisor to Defra, will speak on day 2 on ' Environmentally Beneficial Nanotechnologies: Barriers and Opportunities', presenting the results of a recent Defra study into the potential environmental benefits of nanotechnologies.

Conference Presentations include:
* Prof Peter Dobson, University of Oxford -
Reducing our Carbon Footprint: Can Nanotechnology provide Solutions?
* Sandy Black, LCF - Nanotechnology - More Fashion, Less Waste
* Prof Dr Michael Veith, CEO, INH GmbH, Saarbrucken - nanotechnology and Environmentally-Friendly Paints, Sealants and Corrosion Protection
*Dr John de Mello, Imperial College and Molecular Vision Ltd - Fighting Climate Change through Plastic Electronics
* Christopher Bunting, General Secretary, IRGC - Nanotechnology - Controlling the Risks, Reaping the Benefits

This event will examine these and other technologies that offer real environmental benefit, and will also review the findings of the recently published STOA report on the Role of Nanotechnology in Chemical Substitution.
